Spay/Neuter Coordinator


The primary responsibility of this volunteer position is to coordinate and oversee the spay/neuter program. This shall be consistent with policies and procedures established by Pets Niagara and set out in our Policy and Operations manuals.

Our Spay/Neuter Coordinator is responsible for the efficient and timely response to all parties involved in our low-cost spay/neuter program, including veterinarians, veterinarian office staff, members of the public who are seeking our assistance in spaying or neutering their pet and with feral community cat keepers and trappers. This volunteer position can be largely performed from your home as it primarily involves coordinating surgery schedules, returning telephone calls, answering emails and handling necessary paperwork. The Spay/Neuter Coordinator will maintain a daily operational surgical schedule to ensure an efficient and timely attendance of patients at the applicable veterinarian office. By using data collection tools, will analyze the efficiency and relevance of our spay/neuter program and determine if and where improvements may be needed in our program. You will also follow-up with the veterinarian to determine required post-op procedures. Subsequent follow-up with the pet's guardian is also required to ensure that all post-operation medications are being given to the pet and that all post-operation treatments, procedures and protocols have been and are being followed at home. You will thereafter be responsible daily to contact the pet's guardian to determine the progress of the return to full health of the pet and to ascertain if the guardian has any questions or concerns or any issues that need subsequent medical attention. You will be required to maintains the confidentiality of all information associated with the spay/neuter program, its veterinarians and its recipients.

The successful candidate for our Spay/Neuter Coordinator must have excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills as well as exercise professionalism and diplomacy in all oral and written communication. Knowledge of spay/neuter procedures and practices would be of enormous benefit as would any experience in a supervisory or management capacity, although these are not pre-requisites for this volunteer position.

Please note that allergic or other medical conditions which would be aggravated when working around animals or while performing volunteer duties may be a disqualification.

Additional qualifications for all of our volunteer positions include:

* Successful volunteer applicants who are under the age of 16 years will be assigned light duties only commensurate with their physical and mental ability and skills. Volunteers under the age of 16 must have an adult attend their volunteer sessions with them and remain throughout the whole course of the volunteer's shift. The parents and/or guardians of volunteers under the age of 18 years will be required to sign any medical liability waiver and release forms as well as the Confidentiality Agreement on behalf of the volunteer and themselves. The provisions for and requirements of volunteers under the age of 18 years may be amended from time-to-time without notice.


Requirements

  1. All volunteers report to the Executive Director and, from time-to-time, to the Assistant Manager.

  2. All volunteers are required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement* prior to engaging in any volunteer activities.

  3. All volunteers are required to sign a Medical and Liability Waiver* prior to engaging in any volunteer activities.

  4. All volunteers are required to represents Pets Niagara in a professional manner at all times: in appearance, demeanor and following the behavior expectations set by Pets Niagara.

  5. All volunteers must obtain and provide proof of tetanus vaccination prior to participating in any of our volunteer programs.

  6. Teasing, neglect or any instances of animal cruelty will not be tolerated and will result in immediate dismissal from your volunteer position.

It is expected that every volunteer of Pets Niagara supports its mission and values. Pets Niagara reserves the right to modify, change or add to the duties of these volunteer descriptions at any time.
